September 16/17 and 23/24
The following Big Idea is for the following two weeks.
Big Idea: Knowing God is worth more than anything
Key Verse for 16/17: Philippians 3:8a (Contemporary English Version): “Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”
Key Verse for 23/24: Philippians 3:8b (Contemporary English Version); “…I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage. All I want is Christ…”
Initial Thoughts:
Week 1: We want to communicate the truth that there really isn’t anything better that we could do than to know more about Christ. We really need to put an emphasis on the greatness of God because week 2 will stem off of this. This should be SOLELY focused on how great Christ is, and NOT be focused on comparing Christ to the things of this world (that is for week #2).
Week 2: This week illustrates how worthless the things of this world really are in comparison of knowing Christ. An application is not living for the things of this world but living to know more about Christ.

I think that a really important thing to emphasize is that if all we want is Christ, then we will participate in God's family everyday of our lives.
This is what I mean: Matt. 25:34 ff. says basically that whatever we do (or don't do) to His brothers we did it to Him! Paul also says in his letters that we (the church) are Christ's body.
SO if we want Christ and Christ=Church, then we will serve and participate in the community of Jesus Body called the church. The way we serve Christ is not in solitude. We cannot serve Christ in permanent isolation. Of course, we need times of solitude and silence and isolation from others, but that is only part of a healthy spiritual life. We move back into isolation, but it is only so that we can move deeper into community. We go into solitude so we can better serve when we return to the group.
Communicating this to the kids has to be very simple though. The reason I wrote all that I did is so that we can grasp the bigger picture of what serving Christ means because only then can we communicate it to the children!
Can anyone think of a great way to illustrate this or a cool story to tell the kids?
