Big Idea: God wants our lives to be different
Verse: 1Corinthians 15:33
Initial Thoughts: The message in church is about the resurrection (1Cor. 15:12-34). The point is that if it didn’t happen, we’re wasting our time. Without the resurrection we would only have hope in this life…that would be futile (1Corinthians 15:19). The adult concept is if the resurrection never took place, we might as well live like there is no tomorrow – meaning, hoard up treasures for ourselves here, today (1Corinthians 15:32). For the children, Paul’s next point in verse 33 is the key we’ll focus on. God wants us to be different as Christians (i.e. living for him, not for ourselves) and we need to make sure we are around people who know the same things. The idea of picking who our friends are is very important as a Christian…Paul says it will negatively affect even the best of intentions. The point is to understand what a Christian does (live for Him) and an important thing to remember is making sure we have friends that want to do the same thing.

i would rather teach the resurrection for this purpose: most people especially children, think that the reason jesus died was so that we can go to heaven when we die. the resurrection is not a fancy way of saying "going to heaven when you die." Its not "life after death" but instead it's a way of talking about being bodily alive again AFTER a period of being bodily dead. We have to be careful when we talk about heaven to children because far to often we teach as if our hope is to be in a place called heaven that is far far away and totally differant than anything we know now and God will be there. but the real hope of christianity is that we live in both "dimensions" of the created order because they were meant to interlock (heaven and earth) and share in relationship with God (he will live with us), eachother, and the rest of the created order; and we will behold the beauty of a renewed earth, where there will finally be true peace and security under Jesus the worlds true King (John 20; Rev. 21,22; Rom. 8; Is.2,11,55,65). i know i just said a lot but i think its really essential that we dont dummy the word of God down for children. children are smart and i dont think we give them enough credit. when i was a child my parents didn't make the bible and "easy" thing to understand because there are mysteries and if anyone is able to accept those myteries it is the children we teach (Matt. 18:3;19: 13, 14)!
